Yes they did.

I used to race my dad's kyosho buggy with my tyco bandit and it would outrun it. I don't remember what happened to it that retired it, but my dad destroyed his kyosho car (expensive) while racing my truck, cartwheeled it over four times after running up over a branch going downhill....broke rear drivers wheel and axle off ugh.

Good times.

Hi all, I'm a newb but would love some advice. I'm looking at buying a rc drift car as an Xmas gift for my BF but have no idea what to look for or whats decent. Any advice on what to look for and/or what questions to ask the local hobby shop? Hopefully I can come across a RX-7 or R32.4 body to match one of his cars.. but 'spose can't be too picky! fyi I'm from NZ, not sure if we'd have the same caliber or variety that you guys have in the US etc thank you!

look up tamiya or hpi racing. tamiya ta05 vdf or any hpi drift car, any car can drift ok with just drift tires. Bodies, they have both rx7 and r32, dont expect it to be cheap xmas gift though... run around 300-500+ US dollars for a full/decent setup. Welcome to Speedtech R/C - Your R/C Company is good place to go.

I don't recommend nitro for beginner. Too messy, and can be hard to start/tune etc. Yokomo no longer distributes in the US, only place that imports them is DRIFTSPEED.COM DG-5 / DG5 suspension Exclusive US Distributor gonna suck when you break parts and have only one place to get parts from. Or wait overseas.

Is it a gear diff or ball diff? Pretty much all diff's in rc are lsd gear type or ball type. I don't think anyone makes open diffs anymore. You can use thick grease to lock the gear diff up, depends on setup too. Ball diff you can use grease or just tighten it. Depends on tire setup too.

The best mod for an RC car is track time. We had a guy consistently finish in the top 10 in our second season with a mildly modified HPI E10. Competitions definitely increase the skill of a driver more than any drift session can ever do. Parts wise however, a spool in the rear will definitely help.
And yes, the VDF is a CF/ aluminum chassis. It is Tamiya's high end drift chassis built around the goal of attaining zero ackerman.

haha nice. i just thot it was woven granite.
by spool u mean like a 2 way diff? or locked?

and i got some hpi drift slick tires, not knowing theyd mix bad with regular treaded drift tires....are the slicks only for nitro drifting or just high speed drifting and will work with electrics too?

If you want to lock it up without the use of a spool or a rigid axle, take out the balls if your diff is a ball diff and glue the diff together to lock it together, kinda like welding up a diff.

I have 2, a really bottom-of-the-line accessorized tamiya ta05-ifs with AM receivers and a 70$ esc that i made years back b/c I just wanted to get to know the process of building/setting one up.
my 2nd one is a TA05 ver.2 with Novak 10.5T brushless motor and esc, futaba servo, and airtronics 2.4ghz transmitter/receiver. I still use the stock tamiya tires for grip, but also switch out to another set of wheels w/ abs pipes on them for drift, but my diffs are both open and stock so it's a bit weird to keep it sideways predictably.

Welcome to Speedtech R/C - Your R/C Company they can order most parts and get it shipped quickly.
You can adjust diffs so it acts similar to a spool. If its ball type, tighten it down. If its gear type, put thick grease in it. To "make" one, use epoxy or any permanent type glue, but be careful no to get it on the pulley or more parts than needed, just in case you may need to rebuild/swap out parts.
