when my key is in the off position and even when its not in i can turn everything on just as if the key was in the on position, could this be caused by a faulty ignition switch or am i chasing some sort of wiring gremlin?

Car is a virgin 89 base model coupe, auto trans.

Also, could i use a 5 speed ignition switch, or even an S14 one? whats different about them? thanks
