You can always make it more rigid by skinning it in fiberglass and perhaps getting away with 3/8". Again, maybe you can make the mounting provisions more robust.
Keep in mind, nothing is going to be perfectly rigid. There will always be some flex, and even if there is, how much is it actually taking away from what you are trying to achieve? A small change in driver skill goes a much longer way than flex in a splitter.
