To take the filter off, use one of those cap-type oil filter things that attach to a rachet and a long extension.. easily found at any auto parts place. As far as spilling oil all over the place taking out the filter, not much you can do about that. I just place a lot of newspapers underneath and go in and spray and wipe everything with a degreaser when I'm done.
