location of speed sensor connection?

My trans has only wiring to the reverse lights and the speed sensor wires/ plug are gone. Where does the speed sensor connect to. A description of the receiving plug, area it is in the harness would help a lot.

Get a factory service manual. It shows illustrations of where all sensors are on the transmission.

Try searching for 5 speed swap threads for actual pictures of sensors and connectors.

it is next to the starter. It's 2 prong. It looks like it doesn't really belong there if nothing is plugged into it.

Are you saying you have no actual speed sensor? The wires should be permanently attached to it if it's an S13, and that piece plugs into a connector that hangs loose from a wire loom beside the starter.
