ok so i have a 1989 240 SX SE coupe, lost dirve and overdrive the other day, so i decided it was time to put in that manual tranny i'd been saving for a couple yrs. evrything went well untill i went to start the car. looked up the wiring diagrams, and connected everything as shown. but now when i try to start the car it sounds like its jumped time,turns over fast and pops every so often. is it possible that it jumped time as soon as i tried to start it for the first time after the manual install?

jumped time?. I assume you mean that you think the timing is off? Think logically, how would that happen unless you altered either the distributor, or its wiring? (which should not be touched in a simple trans swap)

popping means it's holding compression.

do you smell fuel from the exhaust pipe after a few cranks? if you do, your injectors _should_ be good, and your fuel pump is good.

check spark. the fsm has an extensive procedure for checking the dizzy. even if you take the spark plug out and watch it spark, it doesn't mean the spark is good enough for ignition, so check the fsm for that procedure.

After you locate the problem, make sure to unflood the engine before trying to start again. wet spark plugs won't spark, and too much fuel won't ignite.

if it's been like this for many cranks on a high mileage engine, you might want to do an oil change too, as fuel leaked through to the oil is not good, since it will thin out the oil significantly.

On an '89 model? Suuuure. Crank position sensor is only found on S14s, and has nothing to with engine operation or drivability.

As directed, check for the obvious things, spark, fuel, air. There's nothing you could have done that should effect startup.

under/ firewall side of passenger fuse box there are two 14-12 gauge wires from old trans harness that you had to cut and splice back together if not spliced together it don't start. Forgot where I heard this.

IIRC it won't even crank if this isn't connected.

And yes, the ECUs are different, however it will run perfectly fine on the auto ECU.
