Plan to purchase one of these within the next few months for use on the weekends. Impact wrenches, air rachets etc. Aside for oil lubricated I want something that will last me but also isn't really loud. How much should I expect to spend? One of the compressor recommended above got some negative reviews.

ok well thankfully someone bumped this thread not to far back but I bought a Craftsman 26gal Evolv air compressor and then bought what im assuming is a "starter package kit" and even at 95 psi which is the recommended psi for the impact gun, I cant even break loose my lug nuts. I always thought that it was the compressor, maybe not enough air, then i also thought that it was just the impact gun. After reading this whole thread it seems like i need to get the 1/2" hose instead of the 3/8" that i have just cuz it does make more sense bout air going through and also get me a better impact gun. What type of impact guns are you guys running? I wanna know what to look for when i go and buy one. This thing is basically brand new, ive used it like 3 times hoping that i could work on my car but ended up going back to using hand tools but hopefully i can just go get a better gun and not a whole new set up.

Like I sad before in this thread. The starter kits suck. Nothing lost if you get it free in their package sales. If you paid for it take it back.

All I can say is do not get an oil-less compressor. The two I have gone through have never lasted... I however have an Oil filled compressor that has been abused, moved cross country twice and has over 6 years of solid use on it. Just change the oil every few months or so and they should last for a very long time.

there are tons of electricians that are unemployed right now. You could probably get a 220v outlet put into your garage for under $200 materials and all. Then get a real compressor instead of these stand up oil less ones.

What about the impact guns.......which ones are you using. I ended up buying the kit cuz it was the last ones and were being discontinued the salesman told me. I looked it up online and i see what looks to be the same one that i bought. Either way it sucks ass. After searching online ive come to the conclusion that it is indeed my gun, so i just wanna know what impact guns you guys recommend. Thanks!

Oil-less are loud as hell too. My dad had a 80 gal in the basement when I was a kid. I could sleep in on the weekends when he would fire it up for the weekend projects. I got an oil-less and I can't be in the garage when it's on. Can hear it in the whole house.

I have a STC International 1/2 In. 650 Ft./lbs Impact Wrench. The thing is deceptively quiet.

Save your money up and get a Snap On MG325. Once you use that, everything else is fail. They also have it in 1/2" as the MG725. These impacts are purely phenomenal. I bought the 3/8" only after seeing one in action at the shop across the street from us. That is a nut busting SOB.

The compressor I got works well for what I use it for, 33 gallon oil less standup ... I got the cheap craftsman 1/2 impact (40 bucks new) and I'm able to loosen my axel bolts, crankshaft bolt... That's the most power I would need... Although, in order to loosen them at that high I set the pressure at 135... But one thing is that it takes about 10 min to fill from empty, and if in constant use, the compressor would be on most of the time. I never use my compressor for long periods of time, but, since moving into my new house, I had to do constant sanding of kitchen cabinets, and it would take forever
Since compressor needs to build pressure... But now I'm done and I only really use it for blowing air, rarely for big bolts on my car, and for painting ... In my opinion it's worth the 161 bucks we paid for it... I'm sure their are better out there, but I won't really need that...

I was thinking of this thing, which sounds like what ^^this guy has:

People here are saying oil free sucks though.

Would I be better off with this oil-lubed 27 gallon compressor?

It's like a hundred bucks more, but if it's going to last longer, I'm fine with that. My only issue is that it's a smaller capacity tank.

I'm only going to use this for popping off bolts and, occasionally, painting. It's the painting that I'm worried about, as I feel like having too small a tank won't let me paint whole cars.

Any input would be appreciated. Think the 27 gallon unit will work for my purposes?

Well, it is more about the volume of air the compressor/tank can flow at a certain PSI, which for most modern paint guns the PSI required is fairly low. HVLP : High Volume Low Pressure spray guns usually use around 25 - 45 PSI of air, and if the CFM requirements aren't insane which they shouldn't be, you'll be fine with a 27g tank as long as your air compressor unit can keep up.

anything smaller than the craftsman 33 thats talked about above.. is good for airing up tires and thats about it.

Its a good compressor for the money.. can barley keep up with a 1/4 impact and can barley keep up with a da sander.

I wish I would have spend $100 more and gotten something bigger.

There isn't much size-wise between like 33 ($300-400) and 80, and the 80gals are ~$1100.

They've got a 60 gallon for $600, that might be worth it. It's a wall-hanger though, which I really don't want.

Other than painting, I'll really only need it to break loose a tough bolt once in awhile. I won't be using it with an impact all day.

I got the red compressor it works fine for what I do. I paint and it's no issue what so ever... If u are worried about not having enough power, well just get a more powerful or. When I got mine I went trough sears clearance website, and ur able to search store around your area in which items are marked off... That's how I got mine for 161, but had to drive 30 miles to pick it up... But it was half cost... If u are a hobbyst like me I think this is fine, if u are a shop don't buy this

I have the horizontal 33gal craftsman now for three years and no problems at all. The oil units are labeled as professionals because they are meant to be run in shops all day long, hence the oil lubrication.

Disclaimer: I work for Sears and we just came out with an update to all our compressor lines, most of the new compressors are available with dual outlets and the smaller pro series is a 110/220 capable unit for those who want something oil lubricated.
