Great video, it really laid out the reason why the Dreamcast failed. SEGA really burned the game developers and customers in the past.

I remember having a Genesis I held onto for YEARS before Sega CD came out (which I also bought). Then I got really iffy about Sega once a new smaller Sega CD came out, then 32X and a year later Sega Saturn.

Because I was such a fan of Sonic, I went ahead and got a Dreamcast and still have it with me boxed up some where. TXR2, Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure 2 were my favorite games.

Some times I wonder what would have happened if Sega didn't cause such confusion with their products and stayed with a stable platform that game developers can work with.

This is true. But it wasn't JUST the release of the PS2 itself but the fact that it was a DVD player.

That was the peak of the rise of DVD's. In Japan all the video game stores turned into videogame/ DVD stores. And in all those stores they have countless PS2's playing DVD's. PS2 sales SORED in Japan while the Dreamcast started to collect dust. Even though the Dreamcast would still have a better library of games then the PS2 for a good 6-9 months later.

This is the LARGEST reason the Dreamcast didn't make it and it was just a side effect of being the first out the gate.

Mel, I'm going to have to say the largest reason was developer support and brand image to the consumers. This of course is my person opinion.

The Xbox 360 supports DVDs, while the new format out there is Blu-Ray (ala PS3)...however with great developer support and brand loyalty it's still holding its own.

I disagree and so do most experts. Sega had the support. And the lack of support they may have had from third parties was easily made up by their high quality and high quantity of first party titles.

And the brand itself was tarnished slightly with the Saturn but the Dreamcast broke sales records and changed the industry. Obviously consumers were supporting it.

Yeah but the switch from DVD to BR is no where near as significant as the switch from VHS to DVD.

Yeah, when the PS2 launched, most Japanese didn't yet own DVD players. The devices had very low market penetration, so people were buying the PS2 left and right *just* to watch DVD's on.

That was like the absolute pinnacle of gaming....1999-2001. I remember picking up my DC on launch day and camping overnight for a PS2.

I camped out too. It was sooo much fun. People brought grills, we tossed around a football, people had the systems in their cars bumping. Man it was fun.

The next system I waited in line for was the 360...and man did that suck. It was Nov (IIRC) and it was cold as shit. It got down to like 30 degrees over night. I had a sleeping bag and slept on the hard blacktop. Man it sucked.

that's a pretty good deal, even with the games.
back in high school i didn't have high speed internet. wasn't available on my street until senior year. so i had to go over to a buddy's house to download dreamcast games..
funny story. sometimes i wish the internet didn't exist, so i'd have more of a reason to hang out with people.

The only time I ever played Dreamcast was in high school at my friend's house. This was 2001ish. I think they were already being sold off for super cheap at GameStop locations and whatnot.

dreamcast was undoubtedly a great system.

unfortunately, it wasn't great enough to make people forget about sega ripping them off with the whole 32x/saturn debacle.

shame too, the landscape of consoles today might be different if sega hadn't been so douchey with its fanbase.

Naomi 2 Arcade Hardware - pretty uncommon.

NAOMI 2 Sega Arcade System Mother Board naomi2 JP model - eBay (item 140340283911 end time Sep-16-09 00:53:04 PDT)

Pretty good deal, actually. It's fully compatible with all Naomi 1 titles also, and it'll run arcade-perfect Virtua Fighter 4.

I've never owned any NAOMI gear. I had a dedicated VF3 model 3 cab for awhile, but it was a one-trick pony.

This would be a neat thing to have, but I'm not sure if I want to get into another arcade system. I've got a lot of money tied up in SNK MVS, and I can't imagine starting a whole new sub-collection of something as expensive as Naomi carts.

EDIT:

I've always wanted one of these, but this one is way the hell up in Boston: (Dreamcast Store Kiosk)

Honestly, most people buying sealed stuff don't ever intend to open it. You wouldn't pay that because you'd be buying it just to open it anyway, so why not just get loose stuff?

I'm actually surprised it's all only $200. Those sealed VMU's should be worth more than that.

Sealed shit can go for a LOT of money. A sealed copy of Chrono Trigger for SNES or something can easily cost a thousand bucks or more.

If I wasn't so informed you'd totally be playing with my emotions. If I was a mod still, you'd be banned for at least 2 minutes for such shenanigans.

Maybe you can pull some strings for the Dreamcast crowd and get him banned any way.
