I have no answer to your question but perhaps you could answer mine. What exactly would a home server farm be used for?

it's just a computer with a ton of storage. i've got 5 terabytes of disk space and i'm starting to push my power supply's limits. plus i don't like my computer being read off of by my roommate watching top gear in the living room over the 360.

My friend runs Windows Home Server and loves about it. You can have up to like 10 users.

What you need is a bitch box and freenas.

Supports all your raid configurations as well as JBOD setups.

I run a 3TB nas jbod setup. Works fine. Will stream and do samba shares. My popcorn hour finds it fine and streams anything off of it.

Been using it for about 2 years now.

You get a real power supply. I mean what's the problem? My friend in IT loves rosewill power supplies.

In my slave box, I've got one of these

Rosewill.com - Power, Power Supply, Value Series Power (200W - 500W ), RV300

That's running a athlon64 3500... 3 IDE HD's and 1 SATA HD and 2 HP dvdl040's.
Has been for a while.

I would imagine 500W would hold you fine. Remember Speed is useless in your server unless you've got a gigabit network setup around it. There's nothing coming through that 100b-t port that's gonna tax anything. I can stream HD and be coping files to and from my file server box and it's a p2 500. NAS's don't need real power. Find a Old pc on craigslist. Throw in a pro power supply. throw in 4-6 HD's. Rock out.

Corsair has a 1000W power supply if you really think you need all that power. It would be best to check and see how many volts you are actually using. You'd be surprised at how little you might be using.

try using this Welcome to Corsair :: Power Supplies to calculate approximately how much power you'll need.
edit: also found this one on newegg. http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

id use both and see if you get similar results.

and honestly id stay away from rosewill. ive had 3 doa power supplies from them...
I have an Antec BP550 Plus running a AMD 6000+, 4gb g.skill DDR2 ram, eVGA 8800GTS, and 2 SATA 3.0GB/s HDDs with 4 fans and a single DVD burner.
