| misanthrope ![]() | If you have to get the car back ASAP, & the car belongs to your mom, I would suggest this (worked for me in the same situation 2-3 yrs ago in San Diego) just have her try to get the car at the impound. have her say you took the car from her, without her permission & that she doesn't want to file charges against you. doing this allows you to get the car before the 30 day period. worked for me at least. going to court might take a bit longer. longer it takes to settle this, the more expensive the bill at the impound. what does it cost at the impound these days? $150 base tow charge, plus $50/day parking? But yeah, 4th of July Weekend is arguably THE WORST time to drive around period. 2 yrs ago, I got busted going 12 mph over the limit on the Monday after. cops were ambushing ppl left & right everywhere around the same time. Here in Los Angeles, the SFV, SGV, and Hollywood are terrible. I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying the OC might be. Ppl are also driving extremely reckless for some eerie reason. There's been two car wrecks outside my house just within the past few days. Definitely not my favorite holiday. |

| Premium Member ![]() | Its not just cali, my friend and I were in his rx-7 while our other friend was driving his passat. Buddy in the passat got pulled over for not having his headlights on and apparently had an unpaid ticket that he didn't know about and in turn his license was suspended. We stopped and waited, noticed that there was something wrong and got out to talk to the cop who had run the registration on the car and since there was no DL on file for the registered owner, had called a tow truck to take the car to impound. My friend being military has a valid license, just not in Arizona, and when he showed the cop, all the cop said was, Oh, my mistake, Ive already called the tow truck, but you can follow the driver and get it from the impound today. WTF? After he tow and impound fee, It was 300 dollars, which my friend didn't have, so now his car is sitting in the impound. And turns out that the cop pulled him over after the official sunrise so the headlight ticket was thrown out as invalid anyways. That and the driver had recently moved and did a change of address but something with the courts filing system was screwed up and they had been sending stuff to his old address, so he didn't receive any notifications. And to top it off, the car sat in impound for like 3 weeks before he had the money, and the registration happened to expire like 2 and half weeks after the car was impounded, so with the car being in the impound and my friend having an out of state license, hes having issues renewing the registration. Also last year I got pulled over for having a suspicious vehicle (thats what the cop said when I asked him why he pulled me over) and didnt realize my insurance card was expired, so I got a ticket for that. Went to the courthouse, proved that I did indeed have insurance and ticket was dropped. I get a letter in the mail stating that I needed to prove my insurance to the state of Arizona or my registration would be suspended. Called the courthouse regarding the letter and they told me that they did have my current insurance on file and that letter was just before the update. A couple weeks later I get pulled over for suspicious vehicle again (seriously ridiculous, ticket even says my speed was 40 in a 40) and when they ran my registration it was suspended for not having proof of insurance on file. They took my plate, gave me a ticket and told me Id better not get pulled over on the way home without a plate or my car would get impounded. Ended up only being like 10 bucks to get a new plate, but considering at the time I was working 32 hours and taking 15 credit hours at the u of a, finding time to deal with that bs was the biggest problem. Living in Tucson for like 6 months with that car I got pulled over for a suspicious vehicle or to make sure I "wasn't intoxicated" like 7 or 8 times, and then when that car got stolen the cops didn't do shit about it. It makes me feel like the cops aren't as focused on criminals as they are on law abiding citizens. Every single time I have gotten a ticket in Tucson, it was dropped because it wasn't valid. That tells you something about the agenda of the law.

| Zilvia Addict ![]() | At this point I wont stop for PD or for CHP. I call 911 and tell them to send a Sheriff. Fucking Fresno PD will shoot you for breathing then CHP will roll up and give you a fine for being shot. Let me google that for you |

| Zilvia Addict ![]() | I had the same shit happen to me in my S14. Bone stock, nothing modified at all. Got pulled over 5+ times for being suspicious, 3 times for brake lights being out (dusk in LV is bad for zenki tails), 4+ times for registration (dropped because of current registration in my glove box), and got my car searched over 9 times. This was all from April 07 - October 07. Oh and went to jail 3 times because metro PD's system said I had warrants I never had. All of those charges were dropped in court by the judge for being invalid. Its fucking bullshit whats going on with this shit nowadays. Get a lawyer, and fight that shit. I did and it was the best thing I've ever done. Also still missing about 2g's in bail fee's from that shit.

| misanthrope ![]() | Well, you just have to cover your ass with coppers in general. as a rule of thumb, it's 'guilty until proven innocent'. not all police-men are bad, but there enough out there to warrant being cautious. having your car towed b/c the cop has no paper-work on file for your license, current registration, & valid insurance are common tricks used by police to cause pain & suffering to drivers. Just make sure to keep a copy of all documents inside your wallet, just in-case. You probably shouldn't keep any documents that have your personal info/address in the car anyhow. Someone who steals your car and/or breaks into it, might not stop at that. |

| Performance Development ![]() | well i finally got the car back. im definetly going to file a law suit. the same stupid cop that impounded my mom's car was actually in the front office at the Sherifs Department when i went to go get the car. I got my proof of licence from the DMV and went over there. (after they denied my mom her car after saying she didn't let me borrow it) i show up and show the guy the ticket and my mom's registration. told him i was there for the release form of the car, he looks at my licence paper from the DMV. and the ass hole tells me he has to see my passport. (green card holder) at this point im like what the fuck. but whatever i go get my passport and show it to him. with my DMV papers. then he proceeds to ask for my Green Card and some Form from the INS saying I'm here legally. at this point im completely pissed the fuck off because traffic manners have absolutely nothing to do with what he is asking. I proceed and ask to speak to the manager / person in charge. he asked why. I said because i need to speak with person of higher authoroty and that in my opinion someone that wasn't a complete douche bag. that got him pretty mad. but anyway another officer went ahead and called the Captain. after I spoke with the captain i showed him my license. thing from the DMV and he said all fee's would be waived that i only had to pay for the release form. wich was 150$. so i went ahead and paid for that and was on my way. when i got to the tow yard the mother fuckers told me I had a 480$ bill. to pay for, I told them that the Police department waived the fee's since it was a mistake and the ass hole said that that wasn't his problem that he didn't have anything to do with the police department that those where HIS FEE's for towing the car and holding it over the 3 day weekend I think it's complete bullshit i'm going to speak to an attorney and see what i can do because i think it's complete profiling / under the table bullshit. |

| misanthrope ![]() | Depends on the area in my experience. Los Angeles overall is pretty laid back, bar some areas. Long Beach, I've had good luck with. OC has it pretty bad with all the barricaded checkpoints, & other stuff. It's like a police-state down there, lol. |

The rules are totally set up for the tow-yard's profiteering. If your car gets stolen (and you report it to the cops & insurance), it gets picked up by the tow yard, and you are liable for all fees. It's irrelevant whether you're the victim or the offender. But, yeah, it certainly wouldn't hurt to speak to an attorney, and see if there's enough ammo for a case. At the very least wouldn't hurt to set up a court date and petition for a refund. I'd also try to speak to the lawyer about the two cops you dealt with. The desk clerk was most definitely being abusive and un-professional. Lol, I'm going to tape record every encounter I have with any cop from now onwards. | |

| Zilvia Junkie ![]() | I've only had one bad encounter with a cop. He randomly pulls me over, runs my information, comes back to me and gives me a ticket for renewal of registration "reminder". The car was registered at the time, a couple weeks prior to the pull over I had gotten a mail from the DMV asking to pay the renewal fee. So I was just saving up money to pay it later before the due date. I ended up going to the city hall, showed them my registration, and paid a hefty $10 court fee. lol sukzdonit?

| Zilvia Member ![]() | I know you're not a fan of these fuck the police threads, but in this case, it's VERY much warranted. That's pretty shitty that they made you go through all that. You shouldn't even have to pay that $150. I hope (and kinda don't hope) you take these guys to the cleaners. They definitely had no business asking you about your immigration status. Times like these, it might have been better to just drive off and let the police chase you home LOL! Mom gets her car back, they get a harassment suit, and hopefully you don't get shot :P |

| **Negrodamus** ![]() | cops pull shit like this and then wonder why people go on shooting sprees. talk to a lawyer and sue the state for this. the fact that he wrote the drivers liscence number of the liscence that you were driving without should be enough to prove you right. believe me, if this were me the state would be paying those tow fees and paying my ass for the wrongdoing.

California is a state. Discussing indiividual city populations is irrelevant. As of 2008, California was the most populous state. As of 2007, it is the 12th in population density. Even in the city list you posted, California owns 4 of the top 12 most populous entries. Given the amount of people and their concentration, plus the likely high rate of car ownership, presence of big cities, presence of industry and business . . . . it's no surprise California is the source of attention-grabbing social behavior of any kind, whether it's "police brutality" or other.
