Books, Yes Books!

Alright, I have a lot of free time as of late. No job, no school, and it's summer. When I'm not out "celebrating" life. I don't want to spend as much time playing xbox or sitting in front of the computer or any of that other useless and time consuming crap. So I figure reading a book for pleasure might be beneficial.

What are a few titles I should pick up? I'm down for anything except fantasy (LOTR and Harry Potter kind of stuff) and romantic novels haha.

Also, what books are you reading right now?

Can't go wrong picking up classics like On the Road, Catcher in the Rye, Brave New World, Gatsby, etc. Maybe Neuromancer if you're in a science fiction mood.

Just finished reading Into the Wild (re-reading actually). My friend gave me the whole Dark Tower series of books by Stephen King a few years ago so now I'm finally getting around to reading them. On Gunslinger right now.

Since you're only 18, I'd recommend you go to the library and check out some classics or the following:

I recently read "Blindness" by Saramago--about a mysterious disease that makes people lose their sight. Government throws any patients in a mental hospital, and eventually anarchy ensues--murder, rape, pillaging, and pretty much everything in between. The author actually won a Nobel for his other work if that means anything to you. Great read.

Also "Post Office" by Bukowski was entertaining as hell--about a guy who hates his office job. To top it off, he's an alcoholic womanizer with a gambling problem. If you've ever worked a corporate job or ever see yourself working for The Man, this book will appeal to you, its hilarious.

Cant go wrong with Bukowski. I also like Andromeda Strain, and Hot Zone, Eaters of the dead (not what it sounds like), and others. I gotta throw it out, that reading history (not the stuff they taught in school) can be very enlightening, especially if you are interested in how things got to be the way they are now. Religion is also an interesting read (bear in mind im not religious)

anything by chuck palahniuk.
Choke, Survivor, Invisible Monsters, Lullaby, and, of course, Fight Club, are all balls-out awesome books.

1984 by George Orwell should be read by everyone, not just conspiracy theorists. Animal Farm is another must read.

i haven't read much Kurt Vonnegut, but Slaughterhouse Five is definitely worth picking up.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

if you want some scifi (more specifically, cyberpunk), somebody already recommended Neuromancer, which is great. my favorite scifi of all time, though, is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

you can never go wrong with Stephen King. if you haven't read The Shining, just ignore everything else on this page and go get that, right now. also Thinner, Misery, The Long Walk, The Dead Zone, and about anything else he ever wrote. Night Shift is a great collection of short stories.

do you watch Dexter? read Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, it's what the first season was based on.

okay i'm tired of writing down titles on my shelf. but Dirty Jokes and Beer by Drew Carey is pretty funny.

in before "lol read da vinci code it's soooooo deep"

Just got finished reading Catch22. It was one of the most oddly styled books I've ever read. Good though.

I can't help w/ the fiction so much, but if you're even remotely interested in understanding how the global economy works (Am I the only one... realy... lol) you can't go wrong with Thomas Friedman.

The Lexus and the Olive Tree

The World is Flat

anything from christopher moore
"you suck"
"practical demonkeeping"
"a dirty job"
his stuff is wicked funny and an easy read

if you want a challenge, read anything by david foster wallace
"infinite jest"
"the broom of the system"
"brief interviews with hideous men"
"the girl with curious hair"
the most mind-blowing books, often difficult to read cuz the author is so advanced, but very funny and very rewarding.

Get "The short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. Very interesting read on topics as vast as atoms, space right down to bolts, nuts and humanity itself. All written in very easy to read layman's terms with some good humour thrown in too.

All the general knowledge u need between 2 covers.

I've read at least a hundred 'real' books and I enjoyed Fight Club the most without a doubt.

Even if you don't read much it's super easy to get through and moves very quickly.

I've been trying that. I've got a bunch of storylines. Getting the plot down on paper and having it flow smoothly is the hardest part. I'm gonna take creative writing in next spring so I can hopefully improve on my writing skills.

Anyways I just finished reading the Art of War. Great book.

Next up when I have the time is The Prince.
