It's that time of year for all the end of year awards and top ten lists to surface, but Ward's always brings something different to the table. Rather than pick out the best car or truck that was new this year, the automotive trade journal picks the ten best engines, and this year it focused on motors that manage to balance the competing demands of more power and more fuel economy.

Audi AG: FSI 2.0L turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Audi A3)
BMW AG: 3.0L turbocharged DOHC I-6 (335i Coupe)
Daimler AG: 3.0L DOHC V-6 Turbodiesel (Mercedes E320 CDI)
Ford Motor Co.: 4.6L SOHC V-8 (Mustang Shelby GT/Bullitt)
General Motors Corp.: 3.6L DOHC V-6 (Cadillac CTS)
General Motors Corp.: 6.0L OHV V-8 Hybrid (GMC Yukon Hybrid)
Honda Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.5L SOHC V-6 (Accord Coupe)

The VQ is THE only engine to be on that list since it's debut. Just another tally mark for Nissan.

Hehheeh, GM has more engines on there then Toyota or Honda.

I love how the 4.6 ford made it on there... it's still based off the .302 and is so next gen... bullshit... what about the 4g63 based EVO engines? What about the STi... that list sucks.

Because GM makes great engines.
Even if what they go into is generally subpar.

so?

its V6s for years have been known for their intake mani gasket leaks...and they arent the greatest v6s in the world. ive owned 6 gm cars with v6s.

its v8 are good motors. other than that? fail.

so what, they made a v8 hybrid? that makes it better?

Yeah, a lot of GM V-6's sucked.

The LS motors are great though.
They pick the motors based on what's new and best represents what they are going for.

I'm not saying I want to own a gm motor, I'm just saying I can see why they chose it.
