Custom Manual Steering Rack S13 (Group Buy)

Hey I have a good deal for all of you guys looking for a true manual steering rack for your S13. I've been speaking to Unisteer Performance(http://www.unisteer.com/)and they can custom make a rack and if I get a total of five people including me they can do it for $299 a piece (its $399 individually). So help me save a hundred dollars while getting a true custom manual rack at a good price, I just need 4 more people to jump on. Once I have 4 more people I'll contact Unisteer and let them know. You can contact me at 301-351-3915 or pm me if you have questions I'd prefer that you try calling me first for questions, I'll probably be able to answer most of them, but if you need to talk to Unisteer the number is 330-425-9080 ext. 20 for Gus tell him you talked to Bryan about the S13 240sx manual rack. If we give them enough orders maybe they'll start offering this all the time. I'm not selling anything just trying to put a good deal out there, and I'm not making any money just trying to save some off the cost for my rack (I paid $399, I'll get $100 back if I get 4 people to join in)

Here are the specs: the manual rack would be a direct bolt in for S13 its all measured out and ready to go. However it doesn't come with inner tie rods or rod ends, but it does come with new boots, I figured most people have the nicer aftermartket tie rods and ends anyway. The ratio is the same as a HICAS rack so thats 2.6 turns lock to lock, nice and quick! It comes zinc plated or you can add powder coating (Black, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, and Purple) for an extra $75 or have it chromed for an extra $100. Once the order is placed the racks should be done in 4 weeks. Unisteer is located in Ohio and shipping to me in Maryland is $20, shipping to California was $35 just to give you all an idea of pricing.

This is a brand new custom manual steering rack, no cores needed which means no downtime!

There is no core charge and no core needed this is a brand new custom rack to fit S13. I am not certain about S14 fitment if an S13 rack fits in an S14 with S14 tie rods and ends than it could work I've never seen an S14 rack so I'm not going to make any guarantees. Rack length for just the rack itself (this is not the housing length) is 621 mm, threads on the rack for for inner tie rods are M16 x 1.0, and rack travel is 68.5mm per side.

Breakdown:
Steering Rack - $299
Powder Coating + $75
Chrome + $100
Shipping - $20-35

Who's in so far:

1. ME
2. DALAZ_68
3. racepar1
4. kawika219
5. Osad
6. s14wannab
7. alexander500
More can be made!!!!

So drop that crappy heavy power steering and get a sweet manual rack that is more reliable and smoother with better feel than just turning a power steering rack into a manual.

P.S. I had to shell out $20 to post this so lets make it worth it. Donations to me will be greatly appreciated.

How is the steering feel/effort with this rack? I'm running a smaller Nardi wheel, and some serious camber, plus I'll be getting wider tires soon. I don't want to look like pop-eye just from driving my car...

my question is how is th efeel on this thing for drifting...

ive gotten used to my ''manual'' rack, for over 5 months now...hardly notice it unless im parallel parking a very tight spot or exiting a tight spot

I called Unisteer and asked them all your guys questions, they couldn't answer every question right away so I'll update when they get back to me.

1. They said that they would get back to me on the waranty question, even if they do offer a waranty its unlikely that you will ever need it. Manual steering racks rarely go bad, because they are made of just gears, a bearing, and a housing with a few seals on the end to keep out dust and keep grease from getting all over the place, there is no fluid in a manual steering rack just grease so seal failure is unlikely.

2. As for steering feel and effort, I cannot give you any first hand information on this exact product since I haven't actually used it yet. But I have driven a civc hatch with its stock true manual rack and it wasn't too difficult to turn when stopped (I could actually move it with one hand where my friends S13 w/o power steering I need two hands and then some). It also gave a lot more direct feedback than my friends S13. The civic's ratio is higher than the customs rack's so it'll probably require more steering effort than that but it should be a little easier or the same as a PS rack turned manual while moving (it usually would be easier if the ratios were the same but the custom rack has a lower ratio than the standard PS racks) , and a good amount easier when stopped. Unisteer confirmed this and said since there is no interior piston + seal and no fluid to have to push around and dampen feel that it would not only be easier but also give you more direct feel and control. Unisteer converts RX7 racks to manual and haven't had any complaints. With this rack you will definitely be able to feel the road, and if you're losing traction better than with a PS gone manual rack because there is no fluid to dampen and delay the input.

Will they/you ship to Canada?

If so, I'm in. Who do we make the payments to, and what is the preffered choice of payment?

I am not sure about s14 fitment if someone can send me some measurements for their s14 rack I could figure out if it will drop in. I did some searching and it seems as if this should be able to fit an s14 as long as you use s14 tie rods, the rack travel is the same for s13 and s14 and I've hear of them being interchangeable. But I have not seen it done or done it myself so to be certain here is what I need:

1. Rack length (this isn't the length of the housing, this is the length of the rack from the bottom of one tie rod knuckle to the other, the rack is the shiny thing in the pictures.) 621mm on s13.

2. The thread pitch and size on the inner tie rod knuckle where it attaches to the rack, on s13 it is M16 x 1.0.

3. Diameter of housing tube and pinion housing <--(place where the teardrop bushing wraps around, measured from top of teardrop to bottom, ie max distance). Both are 48mm for s13. Also width of pinion housing bushing seat (width of area where bushing sits on teardrop) ~37-38 mm.

If these measurements are the same it should bolt right up.

i just recently did it and yes it does bolt up, all you need to do it use a s14 passenger side bushing cause i guess the s14 one is a little bigger, im not 100% but the racks themselves seem to be exactly the same from what i checked

would be pretty pimp for an s14.. no ac or ps pump.. less drag on rotating assembly.

-Bump-

This looks like a great option, but I would like to know of first hand experience (I understand nobody has it at this time) if the "feel" would be exactly like swapping in a HICAS rack and existing fluid power steering unit.

There are only 2 bushings that have anything to do with the steering rack. They are right where the rack bolts up. So the bushings needing to be changed would be those 2.

This rack will also fit an s14 if you use an s13 bushing. Energy suspension's bushing kit comes with both the s14 and s13 bushings which is why they have the same part number. For s14 make sure you use s14 tie rods and ends.

Hey guys I have some really bad news. I spoke with Unisteer today and they told me that the rack tube that the passenger side bracket goes around is only 28mm OD (stock size is 48mm) so obviously the stock bracket won't support it. So this is no longer a completely bolt on affair, you will either need to make a spacer that wraps around the tube or a new bracket that'll hold it in place. I am looking into getting a aluminum spacer cnc machined for mine that will still use a stock sized bushing (ie stock or energy suspension, or other stock replacement) around it, I will get pricing from a local company and let you guys know. I apologize for getting everyone's hopes up, and I will keep you all posted.

The good news, the rack has a limited lifetime warranty, as long as there are no signs of abuse or tampering it is under warranty.
Also they will ship to Canada.
