I host the site here at my office. Its on a T1 line and a 600mhz server, with raid 5, 1 gig ram, etc etc. Its not the fastest but it was a few years ago when we bought it The server gets bogged from time to time but runs fine as long as its rebooted ever so often. Of course we have more sites and other services running on this site and Zilvia requires ALLOT more maintenance then the others so we will need a new server so we don't compromise the other sites and services.

I plan to build a new server. I have spec'd it out to cost about $800-$1,000. Although right now we cannot as money flow isn't enough to save for it. We are moving the office soon and will have to get another T1 line which will cost us another $500 per month more then what we pay now So all our money is going into saving for the future costs of our a new T1 or to have the site hosted in case its cheaper.

I have mentioned before about asking for donations to get part of the money but have never went ahead with trying to get donations for a new server since no one replied.

Of course if there is enough response in this thread I am willing to post something to get some donations started. Considering the amount of people on this forum it wouldn't take much at all if people actually donated. So let me know your thoughts!

A successful way that I've seen folks drum up donations on forums it to allow people to buy title's for a modest donation. The best implementation I have seen of this was a contest and the winners got to pick other folks titles. The rules were explained in detail and unfortunately the site has faded away into the internet graveyard so I will attempt to spell it out.

Donation amounts were to be kept secret. Anyone who donated $5 or more was elligible to choose there title. At the end of the contest the top 5 donators (incentive to donate more than the minimum amount) were entered into a raffle and two winners got to pick their titles AND someone elses title. People who paid to have there title changed were "safe" from getting there title changed (incentive to donate).

Just a thought though

Id be happy ot donate. Heck Id be happy to build the comp if you want. I have so many spare parts/computers floating around it pathetic. I just got a Epox mobo with a 1.4Ghz proc from a friend who recently upgraded. Ive got a couple of 30GB drives also. I also have a mobo with ATA RAID, with a 800Mhz proc. I could do a Abit KT7A-RAID, with that 1.4GHZ chip in it, 2x30GB drives running RAID 1, and 768MB of EEC PC133 ram for it all. I would think that should run just zilvia preety nicly. Would need case, I have a bunch of CDroms and floppys. Ive got more but thats what Im willing to part with for a good cause.

Anyway, just an idea. Im up for giving some money, but I want to be able to see my money at work, so while Im willing, Im not going to be the only one, and see no results because you didnt get enough donations to get anything. If we got a few other and we all gave and were able to get something out of it, Id be all for it. Let me know what you think, BTW Ill be out your way the first week in sept. for that Track Event I PM'd you about. Maybe we can get together or something. Let me know.

Got to thinking about what I have lying around and I would be willing to give up the Epox board too, just doesnt have any RAID built onto, but it does run DDR instead of PC133. I also have an Adaptec SCSI 39160 controller floating around somewhere, but again no RAID. However if you do your updates at night like now, you could get by without, however I would not chance it with how much posting is done here. Anyway waiting for the next reply listing part poepl have lying around, we might be able to make one good machine with it all.
