| SR20DET: Need some quick advice I have an s13 with a black top sr20det. Im getting some bluish smoke at idle but not all the time... I come up to a stop light and no smoke. the next stop light there is smoke. It is defiantly oil burning. I just pulled off my turbo thinking it was that but the exhaust side does not look wet or black at all. Just a light tan color. It does have some side to side play as well as a tiny but of in and out play. What would be your best guess at what is causing this smoke? Also I found a kinked oil return hose and it has been replaced but was probably like that for a while Last edited by 79corolla2tc; 08-12-2009 at 07:10 PM. | |

| /\ Yes it is... I dont think it is as bad but that could just be me. I can take some pics of the removed turbo if that would help. Like I said, the exhaust side of the turbo looks fine. a whitish tan color. | |

| Also... I found a bunch of oil in the intake tube for the turbo. Could have come from the valve cover hose or the turbo seals... I dont know. And I just took off my fmic and there was no sign of oil in it. | |

| UPDATE: I did an oil change (15208-53J00 filter and 15w40 rotela T) and so far no smoke. I think it had 10w30 before. I know the manual says 10w30 but oh well. I have read many posts about people running other weights with no problems. On to the outcome. NO SMOKE!!! So far im smoke free so I guess only time will tell. Hopefully the heavier oil will help with the small amount that was passing through the turbo seal. If not, s15 turbo it is. | |

| Yeah that sounds like a classic turbo oil seal. The heavier oil will sometimes work but often you can get away with a restrictor on the oil feed if you have play. Any side to side play can wear the seals. Journal bearing turbos can usually survive a little less pressure especially since that extra pressure is just pushing oil past the seal anyways. | |

| does anyone have more info on where I can buy and how to install a restrictor? I would think you could just buy a different banjo bolt with the smaller hole to restrict the oil. Is this true? I have been searching for about an hour for advice and will keep searching until I find it or someone answers here. Thanks ahead of time for all your help | |
