Need some help or suggestion - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

i am new to zilvia and to the 240 world. i just recently got a 1990 240sx coupe with 89,000 original miles. the first day i got the baby, it started to knock on me....haha. i took it to a shop and they say the knocking came from a broken spun bearing by the crank or something, but he basicaly told me i need another engine, it is not going to run good if i try to fix it. so here is my question. Can i still get a brand new stock KA24e from somewhere(NOT A REBUILT)? How much would it cost to get it? if there is no way i can get a brand new one, how can i tell if a used motor is in good condition? and is there any way to prove how many miles the motor have? My mechanic told me that he found a used stock KA24e at 50,000 miles for $1100, but it's from a 240sx that was totaled in a car accident, should i just get that and put it in the car? sorry for all the questions, i am just really confused on what i should do. and i am really scared that after i swap in the used KA24e, it will break down again in a few months. i am already stuggling a lot to get enough money to try to pay for this swap, there would be no way i can get money for another one if this used KA24e break on me. any suggestions? thanks a lot on reading through it, any suggestion would be helpfull to me thx.

Definitely not worth $1100.00, look around on craigslist and check with junk yards for deals. You can usually find running dual cam motors (KA24DE) for around $300-$500.

if you rebuild the engine why is it going too be worse? bring it to a machine shop and have them rebuild it with new bearings Ect. it will be like new.

the mechanic told me "a lot" but not all manufacture don't rebuilt the engine correctly and they don't used the right internal parts for it. so he think its a better bet to get a used engine with low miles and a good history. plus i only have a budget of $1500 for the engine and labor and he say he can do that and found me that used motor. what you guys think? could he be getting something out of this from me or something?

i vote no. aint worth it, he's taking advantage of the fact that your young, and dont know a whole lot about this. i say just find a good runing kade, and have it put in, if you cant do it, ( and save some money), unless you just wanna rebuild the sohc.

Not worth it, Get a dual cam for cheaper and throw it in. Problem solved. More HP and better overall engine design.

lol 1100 for a ka24e motor.. you can get a 240sx for that price.. that mechanic is trying to make 100 times profit off you.. a ka24e usually goes for 100-200.. i would stop going to that mechanic if i were you..

i can sell you my SOHC and install it for you for so much less than 1,100.00. probably take me a weekend. Never go back to that a-hole mechanic

you guys need to chill.

mechanics and dealerships generally don't know about the 240sx community parts market, and therefore do not have access to free automatic transmissions and $100 sohc ka's.

the mechanic is probably sourcing it from a junkyard, which is why its so expensive.
