Knock-off Kouki Tails

Thought I'd share my shot at making some fake Kouki tail lights. I bought some new ebay euro's pretty cheap from a seller on here. These ones. I removed all the plastic lens to do some painting and re-seal with silicon. I masked off and painted the center garnish as best I could to resemble the 180sx piece. And painted the center red circle on the tail lights to make only 2 on each side. I just finished wrapping them in red vinyl and rewiring them tonight. I thought it turned out pretty good. It looks better than my cracked and faded stock tails, so I figure I'll rock these until I can afford the real deal.

Just finished up and it started raining. Didn't stop me from getting some shots though.

And the front for good measure.

not bad at all, if nissan were making the hatch in current day, tails would prolly look like that (given everything is just tinted plastics now)

Omitted. I made the high-glow brake light blink for the turn-signals.

This isn't something new at all, been done a lot before and well documented. In any case, yours isn't even an example of these lights done well.

Looks good in my opinion.

I would disregard all the haterade you're getting. Anybody that can justify spending $400+ for taillights on a sub $5000 car needs to re-evaluate their opinion of stupid.

Way better than stockers!

Thanks. I just figured people might appreciate some budget-minded hard work. But it appears it's just instant shit if you don't spend alot of money on it.

Yeah, unfortunately nowadays, everything has to be Powered By Max or some uber rare JDM part to be cool.

It has nothing to do with that. It's just it's been done hundreds of times before and documented. This is nothing new. I have this same setup on my car, and it's better done than this one. I actually took the time to measure and properly mask off the clear parts for the center section. I just didn't make a thread about it.

^ Do you want a trophy for not making a thread? Or are you just content with shitting on other people's?

Btw, who said it was new? Last time I checked no one (including the OP) was under that assumption. And since when is there a "proper" way to make your own taillights?

Looks good man, I too took some proper time for masking, I'd say ours are practically identical..
And I didn't realize new threads were so sacred around here either. Am I expected to revive an old thread about tail lights if I want to share my photos?

They're not.

I'll leave this thread alone now. Cool tails bro, looks just like Kouki lights.

My point is, if he wanted to share pictures, we have a picture thread for this reason. This is not a write up, this is just another guy who painted his ebay euros like the hundreds of people who did before it. It doesn't need a thread. That's all.

Fair enough. I'm long time lurking, first time threading...I just know that I spent alot of time searching for tips on this method before I finally did it, a little fresh content won't hurt anyone.

nebraska is the new florida?
this isn't a new idea, or a particularly well done version of it either.
i did this 4 years ago, and for the amount of $ it took, i was quite pleased with how it turned out.

the problem is, every time some noob thinks he's got a great new idea, he comes and makes a new thread, adding MORE clutter to an already unorganized site. now, in the future, someone searching for useful info on the topic has to wade through ANOTHER essentially useless thread. its not fresh content. its nothing we haven't seen before, dozens of times. if you searched, you would have found quite a few appropriate threads in which to contribute rather than starting a new one.

I didn't think it was a great new idea. I knew it had been done before. Can't someone post something of interest to the rest of the community without getting insulted?
The problem is, I couldn't find much visual content on it. The photos you posted, along with Perfect Balance's pics, I hadn't seen before..
Great pics, wish I'd seen them earlier. And now they've effectively been gathered in this thread for anyone interested to see. A little search engine optimization wouldn't hurt this place, most of the links and images are dead. The search is chronological, so anyone searching for this right now would see a culmination of the the past few years of content on this subject.

EXACTLY. now, there is another thread adding to the clutter, and making the search function LESS effective

the idea of a forum is for it to be a tool, a useful one, like a knife. now, if each new thread with redundant or duplicated info dulls the knife, even just a tiny bit, then where do we end up?

Bushido used translucent red vinyl instead of spray paint. I think this way looks best.

You seem to confuse search and content with clutter. Maybe you're not familiar with how this fancy new digital society woks, but I was actually creating more content for users to view via the search. You seem to actually be detrimental to the whole thread entirely, by contributing absolutely nothing.
All I'm looking for is some culminative effort involving cheap-o wrapped tails. JDM Elitist's need not apply.
