lightweight simple radio solution for track car

I am working on building a track car and have everything stripped down to the bare minimum.... however I would still like to have some tunes. The radio bezel is being used for gauges etc. so that is not an option. I would like something lightweight, durable (tire rubber and dust seem to get everywhere), and would prefer to not use batteries.

My perfect setup would be an ipod craddle mounted somewhere that ran off the cars power and to the front two speakers... however I don't think you can do that.. I may be wrong.

So here is the next best thing I have found. It is used for bikers, suppose to be loud and bolts to a round rail (i.e a cage!). I could also mount it a 1000 other places and this wouldn't require me to keep the door speakers (less weight). Downside... I would need batteries, but so far it's the best thing I have found.

iH85BX Bike to Beach Speaker System for iPod - Apple Store (U.S.)

I don't care if I only have ipod music, or even just a radio... whatever is simple and clean.

just mount 2 speakers to your seat next to your ear
get a small amp, I actually got one, its like 1lb or something like that and its like 300W. Plug your whatever player you got into the amp and there you go.

but front speakers are heavy.
If you get smaller speakers that are 3 times smaller you place them next to your ear you still can get a loud sound because its point at your ears

Speakers are heavy?

Give me a break.

Are you running fucking 12" competition subs in your doors?

Come up with a better excuse, like "I gutted my car because all the cool dorifto-heads do it!".

If you want to get creative, install headphone speakers in your helmet.
If not, then install some real speakers and something to push noise through them, or deal with the over abundance of sounds that you created for yourself by stripping the car.

seriously I concur, most of you guys who gut your cars are not even going to track them enough to warrant gutting them.
I am so tired of these trendy fan boy I am gutting my car because its what the track guys do and I might go the track. Uh-oh but shit now my car is all fucking noisy and I don't like to drive it on the street anymore.

LOL your talking about putting a radio in a track car? If its a full on track car and your serious about it. There is no reason for a radio you should be listening to the noises the car is making, as well as the road surface noise as it tells you stuff about the conditions of the track.

If you seriously have to think about running music in your car get a freaking CD deck that has a Ipod input and call it a day. Your door speakers are not heavy enough to upset your cornering balancing. LOL if you even thought that far.

iphone have speaker capability. Remove the 1lb or so out of your pocket and put on dash/center console and enjoy. Then ask your gf to hold it while drifting. installs/uninstalls in seconds. holds lots of music too.

most people don't know cd player has way more weight because if you think about the inertia of the CD spinning couple of 1000's RPM it adds more weight, and can create corner problems.
You could put plugs in the helmet but then you would have problem getting out of the car in case of emergency, you wouldn't want to rip those nice wires if you had to leave the car fast.
and it would be no fun because no body else would hear when you are rollin with the windows down bumpin yo head

^^^^ /thread

no one thinks of their own weight.

is this a drift track car or for grip?

because if its for drift, which it sounds like, your being quite ridiculous.

is the 15 pounds(thats an OVER estimate like crazy) that intense?

are you drifting for times? idk man...

i rock a dope sound system in my track car for drifting.

its dope.

funny thing is when im actually driving, i turn it down, idk, i like to hear whats going on i guess.....

but i also daily this.

There was a guy sponsored by Cerwin Vega that did nopi a few years ago, when he would slide by the wall you could here his subs booming hahah

I agree with Dave. A track car doesn't need any sort of audio equipment, period. Listen to the engine and the track and become a better driver.

If it's not a track car, leave the interior in and run a logical 4 speaker setup.

The fad of gutting a car is so fucking worn out it's sick. The bandwagon pulled out of the station a decade ago and kids are still buying tickets.

Wow zilvia amazes me again.... several posts all by idiots that call me a fan boy and never address my question or provide an answer! I now understand how you get 1,000's of post by spreading worthless opinions and best of all a Mod started the off topic bashing!

- did I ever say I gutted my car to be cool... no, I only SCCA and drag the car, also the interior was completely destroyed from mice when I originally bought the car so it all had to go anyways.

- Did I ever say I wanted a radio because of road noise or rattles... no

- Did you miss where I said the stock radio location is covered up with gauges... and hence why I started down this road

Please think before you jump all over the bandwagon of following someones elses smart ass comment and acting like you know what's going on... that wagon also left!

Is it that hard for people to understand that someone would have a purpose built SCCA car that on occasion might enjoy listening to music with a passenger along for the ride... (what a wierd idea for zilvia, people have fun with their cars and its not all about the hype and being a dick on the internet!)

The ipod amp combo would be a decent way to mount things out of the way and have decent music

too bad Mod's can't get negative rep'd and banned!

I don't know about you guys, but listening to an ipod while driving is really distracting to me.

3.5 inch speakers weigh less than 1 lb each by the way according to Amazon.

make your own set up just like how they do in the racing arcades with bucket seats if you have a bucket seat and probably use the speakers from those skater backpacks there loud enough and come with a phone jack

Your title clearly states:
lightweight simple radio solution for track car which implies you're concerned about the additional weight that will be added by installing a sound system, like somehow it will be the determining factor whether or not you do well. Its dumb to be concerned about that. You can complain all you want about Barry and others being jerks, but you asked for it. If you asked for a simple audio solution, for a track car, then you might of avioded all of this, but you opened up a can of worms with the concerns about weight. FWIW, just put a HU in the glove compartment, like suggested above, since you stated the din is already taken up by gauges. Its not very difficult and can be made as stable as you want it.

Wow and you call people idiots? Let me address your bitches one by one

I never called your stupid ass a fanboy, I mentioned fanboys because they tend to ask these questions and do things like this.

I am calling you stupid because your own title opened the can of worms and you can't take it.

I never said you gutted your car, I did rant about the fanboys who do gut their cars and then ask stupid questions like your title.

I never said anything about people running radios to get rid of road noises nor do I think anyone else did. You are construing something here out of your hysteria.

Do I think since you put gauges in your stock radio location you might possibly be having a problem deciding on if your car should be a track or street car? Possibly.
Do you have serious issues about this whole thing? Yes.

Please think about your title before getting all butthurt about the responses.

Oh and most purpose built SCCA cars do not run sound systems period.

In conclusion I think you are an idiot and deserve what you got in this thread.

If you were really serious about a purpose built SCCA car? Then it would be stripped out, seam welded, caged and no thoughts of sound system.

If you had worded your title different you might have gotten a different response, but by your own rebuttal? It proves your somewhat of a jerk and not a serious SCCA candidate either.

Use your fucking Ipod with ear phones but seriously If I was a track steward where you run and I saw that? I would make comments to the officials about it.

Like I said in my earlier post, anyone serious about being on the track should not even be thinking of having or using a sound system. That is my opinion.

When I drive and do track or serious driving? No sound except the road and the engine., plain and simple.

Now either suck it up or shut up, because your title caused all of this and you have no one to blame but yourself for that.

I think when my brother made this post he may have left out the reason he was looking for lightweight and simple was so it would only be in the car on the few days that he drives it on the Beartooth Run up the canyon or a few trips around town, more of fun days not track days. His car is caged and will be track only with the exception of few short trips, obviously with a cage he won't be DD this or even driving on the street very often. I think there have been a lot of good comments in this post. I do find it funny that there seem to be many on Zilvia that talk crap about trying to build a purpose built track car but add something as small as a little radio, this same discussion has taken place on the time attack forums and many who track their cars and set records every time have similar simple audio setups. I know many drivers that have went back and added radios for down time or even fun laps when your not pushing the car. I see no reason to hate on the idea, although I also think my brother lashed out a little when most were trying to make comments that where sincere not hating. I also see many of the same people who don't like the idea who call their cars track cars at times when most of them probably never see the track. My brother has built and raced everything from G35's, Evo 9's and now because he needed more of a budget car with a new kid and I had a lot of 240 experience and parts he chose this as a way to stay in the racing without the high price of his old cars. And living in Montana and only having a few months a year to race we have to enjoy our cars as much as possible.

I think the reason an Ipod although for me would probably be the best choice is the few times it will be driven off the track he'd like something that both him and the passenger can listen too. I myself raced for 4-5 years with no radio but ended up putting my deck back in and the two rear speakers. Some good Skid Row before a lap always seems to make the day more enjoyable ha ha.

Interesting. So you and your brother both use this account?

Boy, since you want to throw out little comments like "too bad Mod's can't get negative rep'd and banned!", then you really shouldn't admit to things that can get you Banned yourself.

Consider this your warning. Pinked for one month, Thread closed.
