HPballer76's s13 hatch w/s14 sr20

well i have this build log on every other forum so i figured i would put it here to.
I had been wanting a 240 for a while and had been looking around for one pretty much all last summer. I wanted to get one as a project car to work on cause I didn’t want to keep moding my truck. I was originally planning on getting a 240 with a stock kade and eventually turboing it since I was starting this as a learn to drift/fun weekend car. But in October of last year I found a guy that had started a project and couldn’t finish it so I picked up a 89 shell with a blown single cam and it came with an s14 sr20 and a few other parts for a pretty good deal. The only problem was the shell was an auto and kind of ruff on the outside and a little bit of frame rail rust. So I ended up picking up another 240 that was a 5 speed with a running single cam for cheap and it was in better shape on the outside and no rust, it just had a stripped interior which didn’t really bother me since this well be a track/weekend car. So I sold the other shell and the single cam out of my new 240 and ended up making a little money on it. Well enough talk onto the pics!
The shell that came with the s14 sr20

The s14 sr and the blown ka24e with all the parts that came with the shell and sr20. Ohh forgot to mention the sr20 started life as an automatic so hopefully she hasn’t been ran to hard =) also got an extra piggy front bumper and front fenders.

Got the auto trany off. This is for sale if anyone’s interested

Painted the valve cover. This is just temporary I’m going to redo it sometime soon.

About this time I came across another 240 that was a 5 speed and running and driving so I sold the other shell and picked this up for cheap. Wingless and wiperless hatch =)

Then sprayed the block with silver engine enamel to get it looking pretty and replaced a few gaskets.

Installed the turbo manifold.

Then I decided to make life easier and picked up some circuit sports oil and coolant lines.

Installed those. Yes after I took the pic I realized the lines were backwards so I fixed those lol

Had my flywheel resurfaced, new through out bearing and put exedy clutch on.

Put on the trany, then I found out the auto sr and 5 speed use different starters so I got a 5 speed starter.

Then pulled the ka.

Ready to drop the sr in.

And dropped the sr in =)

The only part I didn’t do myself was the wiring which was done by Taylor Durdan at Durdan Perfab. He did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone that’s not looking to tackle wiring them selves.
Started with this.

And ended with this.

Made a bracket for the sohc throttle cable with 2 washers.

My project sitting with my dads.

Re-tapped the stock water temp sensor for the autometer one.

Got an eBay cxracing s14 intercooler kit. Everything fit in the s13 chassis except the hot pipe was a little bit tall and didn’t clear the hood so we took about 3 inches out of it.

Where the s14 kit was to tall for the s13.

Had 3 inches taken out of the straight section.

And had the bov flange and a boost source nipple put on the hot pipe.

Got my boost and water temp gauges installed

And all put together. The bov being held on with a clamp is only temporary.

After getting everything installed and double checking everything we put some gas in her and she started up first try! She ran pretty good to begin with just high idle so adjusted that down and she would hit fuel cut around 4k rpm so upgraded the stock fuel pump to a walbro and so far so good!

Then I wanted to at least have a little protection in the front so we took the factory bumper and cut as little as possible so that it would slip over the fmic.

Put the piggy bumper back on.

Then the car had cut springs from the previous owner so I was planning on just getting a set of megan street coilovers but ended up finding a great deal on a set of used tein super drifts!

Out with the old.

In with the new!

How she sat so far. This was with no adjustment on the coils they didn’t come with wrenches so I ordered those.

Then it was time to get an exhaust on it. Decided to do a custom straight pipe with just a dynomax race series resonator.

Then I picked up some wheels from drifterjerry . 17x9 +12 front 17x9.5 +12 rear, nexan n5000 tires, 215/40/17 front 225/45/17 rear

How it sits as of 4/5/09 this is still with no adjustment on the coilovers I just got the wrenches for them this week and haven’t had time to mess with it. so I will try to get it slammed and more pics up this week. I also have rucas that need to be installed so I can adjust my camber in the rear.

Small update. As of 4/20/09
Worked on the 240 a little over the weekend and got it sitting a little lower. I still want to go lower but it will more than likely stay at this height for a while.

And my messed up quarter panel thanks to the previous owner =(

And a few more pics just cause..

Update 8/14/09
Well as you guys saw when I got the car the back seat and carpet was gone. So I finished stripping the back half of the car.
When I first started chipping away sound deadening. (that was a pain in the a** to get off)

Then wire wheeled the rest off

Then primed and painted

(its all painted now, just don’t have pics)

And a few pics from the last street wise event

Finally picked up some bucket seats! They are f1 spec type 4. they came with a drivers side buddy club rail, still need to get a rail for the passenger side. One seat is new and I was told the other was used for 2 months which I believe since the are both in excellent shape! On to the pics

Drivers side installed

that gets you guys up to date on what i have done for the last year. i will have another update in a day or so with the roll bar in. any suggestions on color?

i know the seat belts are not at the right angle, dont worry the will be getting moved.

also what do you guys think about using s14 inner tie rods with tein tie rod ends and an angle spacer? good upgrade over stock or no?

well i figure its about time i update this, so here we go.

i’ve been working on making the interior somewhat decent.

this is what i started with

ugly blue interior, cracked dash, and holes in the carpet...

then took out the dash. drove around like this for about a week lol

then i went to china for 3 weeks but before i left i dropped my car off to have a mazworx roll bar welded in so when i got home i had this.

then primed and painted.

then picked up some carpet that was real dirty but in good shape and used autozone vinyl and carpet paint to make it nice! lol

before

and after one coat. (ended up doing two coats to make it nice and black)

and swapped the cluster lights for some blue led’s

also painted my blue door panels and a piler trim with black trim paint which came out great. and picked up a black uncracked dash. and started putting it all back together.

and a sweet pic thanks to kristin from the last event!

Amazing build, step by step of your progression.
That thing is simply clean, I got to say the cage is pretty pimp in the white.
Keep up the good work.

thanks for all the comments guys!

yes i i would for sure recommend the seats. i love them and they make a huge difference while drifting. just wouldn't recommend this exact one if you are a bigger guy..

justin. yep i am in nc. what part of nc are you from?

and yarou yes it is a little crooked and it bothers me to lol but it had to be that way for the s14 piping to work in the s13 chassis with out doing a little more custom work. i'm considering going to a midmount ic for next year but not sure yet. opinions?
