I got to check out a set of D-Max coilovers in a Up Garage while in Japan. They appeared to be constructed well. Not that it means anything at all, haha.

What matters is what the shims look like/are made out of, what the seals/rubber pieces are made out of and how they'll hold up to abuse. After that it, of course, matters how they're valved. I'd imagine they're valved like ever other coilover made for our cars - completely over dampend. That being said, if I had to guess where D-Max would fall on the scale of "out the box" coilovers. I'd probably guess they're on the same level of stance, they'll slam your car and you wont be able to tell what a good handling suspension would feel like anyway because your roll center is currently located under the road.

The thing about zilvia members is every couple months they have a new coilover that comes out for the us market that everyone swears is better then the last.

JIC to Tein to Silk road to stance to Kei Office to DG-5 to K-sport and so forth.

Seriously, this debate will never end.

Cheap coilovers are like a fucking a fat bitch as a virgin.
Its going to feel good.
Its your first time.

But compare it to something quqlity, which 95% of Megan and KSport owners HAVENT done, and you will truly realize how disgusting it feels.
If you havent driven on anything else, your opinion is worthless.
Hell, I thought Tein Basics felt amazing when I first got them.

BTW, do people ever consider the fact that dampers are a wear item?
Can DMax's be rebuilt in the states?
What happens if something goes wrong?

Exactly why so many top midwest guys run Stance.
Touge Factory is right down the street ready to service your shit.

But Im not gonna hate.

High end coilovers have better dampening characteristics than shitty brands. Full adjustability on shitty brand coilovers? BFD. Better dampening characteristics ftw. Why? More control over bumps and other uneven surfaces that would otherwise unsettle the car and cause the driver to lose control. Done and done.

hmm correct me if im wrong but im almost positive megan coils supply you with all that.

dmax is of similar quality im sure as megan k sport godspeed etc etc
1. How exactly does a "stiff ass ride" benefit you? It's painful on the street and it makes the car easily unsettled by the slightest bumps and debris on the track.
2. Please tell me exactly why you think you need adjustability.

finally some one mentioned it.

Ksports have some of the worst valving i can think of.

you only feel a diff in 3 or the 32 adjustments. Full soft/Medium(which is still really soft)/ Full Hard. I kept mine a FH the entire time i had them b/c it was the most comfortable ride they gave. On FS or M, they still bounced around on the streets like cut springs, it was horrible.

then i rode on the 2 diff sets of Stance, GR+/GR+PRO, my god what a diff good valving makes. From my small amount of experince, i would have to say valving is everything in coilovers.

I will give Ksports the respect for designing their coilovers. I took one hell of a challenge when i bought them. Everyone talks shit about them, but all the fuckers say is that they blow as soon as you hit pot hole, that is all ppl complain about. Why b/c they have never rode on a set. I loved them when i 1st got them, i was noob, it was expected. The very 1st day i had them i ran over about 6 pot holes nothing. When i sold them in June, after i had moved up to Ohio, i think i put those coilovers through tougher terrain test than the Nissan test course, and guess what they never fucking blew.

But besides that the valving is horrible... but they slam well. that is what you can expect out of the -El-cheapo coils over kits.

Since it is too big a venture to build a tech department in the U.S., we have a parts exchange program. So when the dampers need to be replaced, we will send you new dampers (if not under warranty, customer will be charged for replacement parts).

Unfortunately we will not be able to offer custom valving at this moment...Sorry guys...

summary-
you can spend 900 on some megans that you will get made fun of for, and really arent that good or 1200 on some stance that you will be respected for and have a good ride, and they are easily serviceable.. idk why anyone wouldnt just shell out the extra 300

From the experience I have with other DMax products, I am going to venture a guess and say that their coil overs are going to be of a pretty descent quality. The guys running DMax USA are stand up guys, and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Koji-san in Japan. He wants his customers happy (Bernard as well). Just like Logan, wanting happy customers it is a RARE trait to have in the aftermarket automotive industry. Most companies that are just out there for the money will have a high volume of sales and not give two winds about the customer after the sale. I bought my parts off of Koji in Japan, and to this day, I still have contact with him....almost a year later. How many people can say they have that kind of customer service? Not many.

I talked to Bernard at Formula D and the D-Max coils actually have some nice features. For instance the mounting holes have ring spacers for those people who did an s14 5 lug conversion on their s13. You don't have to drill out the coilover mounting holes with these. They are also inverted monotube so they are stronger. I don't know about the dampening quality though.

So im glad this thread has nothing to do with Dmax. BTW Enjuku Racing drifted on Megans for the first 2 seasons I think. Seems like they worked well for them...

Coilovers are not for daily driving. They are all stiff. My biggest mistake was putting coilovers on. just get some good lowering springs and big ass sway bars like largus and all the other braces, strut bars, wheel spacers and your car will corner good enough for the street and be comfortable.

I bet if they used DG-5, Cusco Comp Zero2 or Zeal Function D they would have done better

Was checking out some stuff on Dmax awhile back and read up on some pricing and info and have a magazine with one of their Japanese ads, and they look like there very well constructed. I know for a fact they've been campaigned extensively in Japan for at least a few years so you know they're good enough to track.

It's more or less of a case where you need to ask yourself "do I need great coilovers at a pretty good price?" or "Do I want to be cheap and buy some crappy coilovers and run the risk of the blowing, breaking, or not working right?"

I came across this blog post by Touge Factory. It might help shed some light on your question:

Tougefactory » Ever wonder what coilover systems top professional drivers use in Japan?

They also ran on cooper all seasons for the first two seasons.

The car was slow as fuck.

Its not a matter of if you can do it, but once you drive a car with coilovers not made by playskool you'll never want to go back.
