Since your road racing, i highly suggest you look into a wider bearing. Looking at discoloring of rod it looks like it was defiantly a spun rod bearing. It probably got so hot to the point where it started to fuse with the crankshaft and the rod failed under shear stress.

Did you have a metal HG? If so, my guess is that you might have a hole in your block somewhere after the rod failure. Thus breaching a coolant port in the block.
I was thinking the rod probably assploded a water jacket, we'll see when I take it apart. Though, the oil that came out of the block when the engine let go was milky white. I definitely would like to have the rods machined for GTiR bearings though.

Luke,
The maxi can only have a turbo 4 cylinder Soon enough, she will be unstoppable. I love LS1s though, maybe in my next car. I wish I could find someone who had photos of the rooster tail. There were tons of people with cameras at that corner.

You know what you should really do. Drop a 13B in there. I've wanted to build a 13B S13 as a time attack car for the longest time.

I'd like to, I love rotaries. It would be a three rotor though. Maybe 4 rotor. Yeah. Sick.

I am done for sure but Alex has a hillclimb with the Evo II. My season started and finished with last weekend Next year I am going to try and make a good amount of events. Hopefully we can find some additional funding for events.

I stripped the block today and sent it to the dumpster. The head was not touched at all, valves or anything. The piston/rod siezed when they were headed upward. The rod went about 4" into the sleeve/waterjacket. I'm now trying to picture how the events unfolded. There was no warning of any issue whatsoever. No low oil pressure light (20psi switch), coolant was perfect temp, engine sounded perfect, then a slight bang, the gear lever shot out of my hand, I shut everything down and pulled right off the course. If I don't find out what happened, its not the end of the world but it would help me in preventing it from happening. There is scoring on all other piston skirts as if they weren't getting proper oil. Everything in the head is fine, no scoring at all. Bearings are all fine for the most part, only that one rod. Maybe some engine builders can chime in. I've never had a engine failure with out warning. What really kills me is my incar video reached the end of the tape right after I turned it on. It would be nice to see or listen out of the moment. Some photos.

Is it possible that you might not have heard some premature rod knock? Especially since your exhaust is really loud. It looks like you used ACL Race bearings? I don't see the other bolt in the rod. was it removed by you or was it out completely?

Is it me or is there heat marks on the main bearings? You said it smoked, how long? Seems like an oil issue.

Seems like there was water mixed in the oil for some time Bill.

And no im not talking about water being in the oil because the rod opened up the water jacket. That milky film on your windage tray tells me it had been in there while running. For awhile at least.

Water eventually mixes with the oil and finds the bearings. There is no real warning. Especially with a loud ass exhaust.

What head gasket, studs, ect were you using?

Luke

Also the marks on the main bearings are only peripheral, there could be some crankshaft (or block) flex exacerbating things.

It looks like there wasn't proper oil clearance on that bearing and therefore it seized so it couldn't feed the oil control ring anything went out of clearance knocked and let go all in an instant.

How do you measure clearances dial bore gauge, telescoping gauge + snap rings or plastigauge? ( I hope not this it's not very accurate for car that's raced) .

Judging by the completely mising rodbolt I would say that was the failure, and it got HOT before it failed. Look at the heat marks on that thing! I would say you had an oiling problem almost certainly.

A a stretched rod bolt doesn't gives time for a cylinder bore to get hot and rod to get hot, and it causes a very fast and loud audible rod knock or just takes it off clean.

It was measured with a dial bore gauge and double checked with plastiguage. The filter was also checked right before the event and was clean. I'd like to believe it were just the wrong clearances but I think it has to do with water somehow getting in there. All four piston skirts are very scored.

My new favorite photo

I didn't see those creamy pics I was hitting the page down button... skipped right passed it. Yeah the coolant would definitely cause that nothing like cappuccino for lubrication.

No don't call me names.

That isn't a rod bolt failure and you claimed that was the failure that doesn't make sense. I'll show you a rod bolt failure. It doesn't show heat like that.

Fluids don't like to compress for one, secondly

That's above the rod cap the beam of the rod broke.

I had ARP rod bolts in my motor in my motor rod let go plastered the bearing and knocks the cap right off no discoloration bolt was bent.

He basically had water lubricating his engine. therefore heat will build up rather fast now that you know I won't need to go any future hope you understand.

Is that a balance shaft removed on that motor?
You can't see in the photo but the top half of the rod bolt is still in the upper portion of the rod, threaded all the way in. I think the bolt just sheared, not sure how but the amount of heat in that small area (the crank journal as well) is f-ing insane. It makes me start to think how much force and power is being produced in such a small area. Engines are so cool...damn.
